... and the rain cometh ...

Good call having a day off today to meet up with mum and Sandra - took them 3.5 hours and three trains to arrive at end-of-the-line Barton-Upon-Humber, arriving just before noon.  Spent an hour and a half in a lovely tea shop which was lovely and warm - had lunch there, and then walked back to the station in time for them to catch the 5 to 2 train back.  Other than that the next train was 6pm.

Sandra had brought us a present, all nicely wrapped up - full of goodies for us to indulge in tonight - including a can of lager.  Just got back to the tent before the heavens opened - lying here in the tent enjoying the fact that we are not out in it cycling!!!
A very cold night once again - I hadn't realised just how cold I'd got last night sat out writing my blog up -took ages to warm up in my sleeping bag- oh for the hottie I sent home!!  Woke up during the night with a nose bleed - not a bad one but lucky I had some tissues handy to prevent it going all over the bedclothes!!!!
Walked across the foot bridge opposite the camp site, over a small waterway and strolled down to the river and a view of the bridge.

Then back up to the very long narrow building that used to be the rope works - the small track that must have run the length of the long building and been used to make the ropes continued in the open air and was marked out in feet - up to about 250 feet/yards??, with stakes hammered in at set distances.  A real shame there was no museum or something to tell you more about how the rope was actually made. Found out on the internet that the building is nearly 1/4 of a mile long and the ropery business dates back to 1767.  Sandra was telling us that her husband worked for a week at the ropery, but didn't like it there and left.  They had lived for 18 months 3 stops up the railway line from Barton, hence why she knew the train route from Conisbrough where she lives now (near Doncaster).

The town of Barton is quite spread out with a surprisingly large array of assorted small shops, some of the buildings looking very old and quaint.  Taking advantage of no one being in the barbers roger called in for a number 2 hair cut- looks much better for it - even if his ear flaps still look very mangy!!
It's really raining extremely hard now - so nice to be snug inside the tent....  Will spend the afternoon reading and nibbling.....
