Tuesday,
Sat in a restaurant on an expensive internet cafe PC - 1 Euro for 10 minutes, so already spent 2 Euros working out how to use the funny keyboard and looking at emails. Another 2 Euros in to write a quick blog now. No photos today either.
3 hard days cycling since arriving at the Hook of Holland at 7.30 am on Saturday morning. Lovely blue skies when we got off the boat but clouded over and the wind got up later. 50 miles cycled to get to the campsite at Zanvoort - the Blackpool equivalent to Amsterdam, not that far inland from the coast here, with Haarlam inbetween. A lovely ride up the coast with a motorway of a cycle way for much of the way - smooth tarmac and fast going, full of cyclists of all ages and ability - from groups of very fast guys dressed in all the same gear out for a training run to family groups - and the occasional cycle camper. Through the sanddunes for much of the way - up and down, enough to slow us down with all the weight so that everyone else sails past you, but not that difficult - until the wind got up that is. Fed up going into the wind at Zandvoort as we rode up the town looking for the campsite at the racetrack there, so turned round and carried along the actual cycle route a little further to another campsite just off the route - only to find that it was full up so had to come all the way back and into the wind again to the campsite we'd been making for originally - and found that it was only a few 100 yards further up from where we'd stopped !!! A sponsored walk in progress on the way up - lots of people walking but the walking track through the dunes is seperate from the cycle track - very impressive - loved to see so many people out enjoying themselves - lots of runners and joggers as well - all so much easier than at home - would love to have these sorts of paths around home. A music festival going on at one town on the coast - everyone cycling to it - a huge bike park for them all been set up. We'd cycled tghe first half of todays route 3 years ago when we cycled up from Rotterdam to the mouth of the Rhine river, then turned inland to follow it south.
Just as in England, there is World Cup fever here - orange flags everywhere - whole towns decked out in some cases, orange wigs etc, bikes decorated. And believe it or not - it's Tuesday and I still have no idea what the score was on Saturday for the England USA match - only know this was on from all the pub adverts in England as we were cycling past.
YEsterday cycled fast and furiously to catch the ferry over to the island of Texel - along with crowds of schoolkids on their bikes - we cycled the last few miles with them - along a dyke right by the siode of the sea - can't imagine that happening in England somehow - a whole class of kids out on their bikes for the day.... Got to the ferry but just missed it by a minute.... - thought it was an hour till the next one so bought a beefburger and chips each, and with out hands full anoither ferry suddenly arrived - a very fasty turn around so had to get on board with the bikes holding our food as we went. Lots of hormnones in the air as a group of older kids on board as well - wouldn't like to be in charge of them as romance was definitely all aroubd - ain't young love nice tro watch (... or not).
Called in at the mainb tgown on the island to search for a supermarket to buy some food - lots of shops, touristy in nature - but struggled to eventually find the food shop. Not sure if a Holland match on as lots of orange bedecked men sat in the cafes watchiong big TVs - very subdued though compared to how I'd imaging the Brits watching a Worls Cup match.
Thought the ferry we wanted from Texel to the next isalnd along in the chain went just after 5 - so cycled hard to make sure we got there in time which we did - but only to find that it didn't run on a Monday - so had to book for tomorrow
Running out of time so will post this now
